lyrics

I.

Enduring enigma we do not dare perceive,
O darkest of matters, do you indeed rest on those
Obscure, transverse dimensions we cannot conceive?
In what secret abode does your essence repose?

If we consider our origin
—The uncanniest sin—
How could from sheer nothingness
Life and matter begin?

Was it darkness before light at the foundations of being,
An invisible mist infusing space with its mystery,
A deaf yet deafening song, a glorious chant the stars sing
Beyond all tiny delusions of human history?

How is there a universe at all?
What secret cabal
Could start life—ex nihilo—
In this endless pitfall?

What invisible force was at work,
What power would lurk
Behind the void that begot
Both the light and the murk?

II.

Still, other worlds dwell in far darker places,
Unbeknownst to us, whence a nameless,
Vague strength drives the vacuum out of its limits

Accelerating the expansion of our haunted universe
Whereof transient existence is brought
To the verge of collapse.

The utter dark grandeur of unthinkable regions
Does bewitch me, for they shield, they cover
All that happens beyond the doors of perception.

III.

O dark matter, to my soul you are
The key to those realms
Where reason surrenders
And human wisdom is yet to shine.

You incarnate the tenebrous mystery
Of all beginnings and ends,
And the cosmos, the missing mass
Of our blemished minds.

For dark is the unknown
At the frontiers of understanding,
And sacred is every attempt
At turning it knowable.

So long as an answer is found,
Mankind beware! Better
To bear the spectre of ignorance
Than to feed and carve the ghost of god.
